“I want you to tell me something first: after you're dead and buried and floating around whatever place we go to, what's going to be your best memory of Earth?" Andy, Dag and Claire represent youth of the 90s trying to reject materialism and greed. We wanted to explore the idea of sharing stories as this is a main theme throughout Generation X. Emerged in a room with layered type and sound, we want to explore the idea of sharing memories, moments and experiences in life. Within our exhibition, we wanted to create a space where the audience feels comfortable and safe to share their stories. Taking inspiration from artist Angus Fairhurst, we hope to encourage our audience to submit a story and then take someone else’s story. “Fake yuppie experiences that you had to spend money on, like white water rafting or elephant rides in Thailand don’t count. I want to hear some small moment from your life that proves you’re really alive.”
Members of the public were asked to respond to this excerpt from the book Generation X by Douglas Coupland. They could write their answers down on a post it note and place that post it note wherever they wanted opposite a projected film that explored the notion of growing up and adolescence in an abstract manner.
